Ecology and ecophysiology

Whether you're monitoring forest recovery or modeling climate impacts, as an ecologist, your work feeds decisions with long-term consequences. But field science is demanding. You're up against time, budgets, remote sites, and growing pressure to produce actionable data that holds up to scrutiny. What if your data told a coherent story instead of fighting you ever step of the way? With better, time-aligned environmental data, you could uncover early stress signals, causal relationships across systems and long-term trends, insights that are often lost when data is fragmented or incomplete.

Left Side

Data gaps don’t just slow research. They threaten its integrity.

You know that partial data can lead to partial conclusions. But collecting continuous, high-resolution measurements across complex terrain isn’t easy. Manual measurements cost time and labor. Disconnected sensors mean fragmented datasets. And troubleshooting drift, power issues, or inconsistent formats can eat weeks you don’t have.

Meanwhile, meaningful shifts in canopy stress, soil moisture, or microclimate can pass unnoticed, right when it matters most.

METER designs accurate, reliable systems to solve the problems that slow down ecosystem monitoring.
We’ve worked alongside ecologists, hydrologists, and biogeoscientists for over 30 years to develop tools that:
Hold calibration in harsh, remote environments
Collect long-term data with minimal maintenance
Stream clean, continuous measurements without manual downloads
Integrate soil, plant, and atmosphere into a single, time-aligned dataset
You get systems used in everything from alpine watersheds to tropical dry forests, not because they’re the newest, but because they work.

Monitoring made easy

A monitoring system shouldn’t take a semester to deploy, or a team to maintain. Whether you’re outfitting a single research plot or coordinating across continents, METER systems are built for fast, easy installation and scalability.

Here’s how we help you move forward:

Choose sensors tailored to your site: soil moisture, water potential, PAR, NDVI, microclimate, and more, all interoperable

Install quickly with rugged hardware designed for repeat deployments in real field conditions

Stream data directly to ZENTRA Cloud: no field downloads, no lost measurements, no spreadsheets to stitch together

Visualize trends in real time to catch early shifts, compare treatments, and validate models faster

With METER equipment in place, your monitoring network becomes more than just a scattered collection of sensors, it becomes a cohesive, research-grade system that works the way you do: consistently, accurately, and without constant supervision.
You gain:
Reliable time-series data that captures key shifts in soil moisture, canopy stress, and microclimate, without gaps or post-processing delays
Early indicators of change that help you catch trends as they emerge, not months later when they’re harder to interpret
Cross-scale insights from plot to landscape, enabling more accurate models, stronger experimental design, and better replication across sites
Streamlined workflows, with synced, centralized data that’s ready to analyze, not wrangled from field notebooks and USB drives
Confidence in your measurements, whether you’re writing a grant, publishing a finding, or advising a land management decision
You’re not spending your season troubleshooting sensor networks or waiting on incomplete downloads. You’re in control of your data and free to focus on the science.

“I really love being able to use the [SC-1] porometer because it’s such powerful data, and we’re able to retrieve this data so quickly and learn a lot about the system.”

Ecology solutions

Better data shouldn't require a bigger field crew. Let us help you get cleaner answers—with fewer logistical headaches. Explore METER ecosystem monitoring systems.

Lab soil characterization

LABROS is an innovative collection of soil laboratory instruments, each designed to work individually or as part of a larger, automated system. Conduct automated particle size analysis and measure soil moisture release curves, saturated and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, and thermal conductivity from a single sample.

Streamline your soil characterization methods by using the LABROS suite of laboratory instruments and software to perform accurate, automated analyses from a single soil sample
Measure both saturated and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity from a single soil sample using HYPROP and KSAT laboratory instruments
Get a complete soil moisture release curve using VARIOS and WP4C lab instruments and LABROS software

Plant stress

Directly measure indicators and causes of plant stress rather than relying on intuition or qualitative assessments of your crops and canopy with cost-effective solutions from METER.

Combine water potential, wind, IR, and stomatal conductance measurements to precisely measure the causes and symptoms of plant water stress.

Canopy productivity

Measure the photosynthetic activity of your plants using simple, labor-saving instruments, and better understand the health and lifecycle of your canopy.

Deploy NDVI sensors for long term canopy monitoring or gather point measurements with the easy to use, handheld AccuPAR LP 80.

Microclimate canopy

Measuring the microclimate with a weather station provides comprehensive data on local atmospheric conditions that directly affect plant and soil processes. Weather stations collect detailed information on temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed, and solar radiation, all of which influence soil moisture levels, evaporation rates, and soil temperature.

Combining the precision of wind, radiation, and precipitation sensors above and below a canopy provides a continuous picture of the microclimate below a canopy.

Phenology

Monitor plant lifecycles more precisely with METER solutions. Cloud-connected sensors allow you to monitor data remotely, while easy-to-use handheld devices make site visits more efficient.

Monitor each stage of a plant's life cycle by combining NDVI and IRT sensors with a cloud connected ZL6 Data Logger.

ZENTRA System

Customize your data collection and logging solution by combining multiple METER sensors with the ZL6 Data Logger and ZENTRA Cloud. ZENTRA stores your data in the cloud, allowing easy access to your data and near-real-time reports from all of your data loggers.

Avoid costly field visits by accessing your data from any web-connected device. Analyze it with ZENTRA Cloud’s built-in visualization tools, and easily share insights without tracking down log files on individual computers.

LABROS System

Streamline your laboratory analyses and reduce human error using the innovative LABROS soil science laboratory collection. Perform automated particle size analysis, generate soil moisture release curves, or measure thermal and hydraulic conductivity with METER laboratory instruments designed to produce accurate analyses in a fraction of the time of other methods.

Even better, LABROS instruments can be combined to perform all of these analyses from a single sample, saving time and reducing measurement errors due to variations in sample characteristics.
