The soil health revolution: Colorado’s blueprint for sustainable agriculture

What if the key to solving agriculture’s most difficult challenges lies beneath our feet? By restoring soil health, farmers and ranchers can improve crop yields, livestock quality, and sustainability—and one groundbreaking program is making it possible.

REVITALIZING AGRICULTURE FOR A SUSTAINABLE TOMORROW

In Colorado, a transformative initiative is reshaping farming and ranching practices, empowering local producers to thrive while enhancing environmental health. The Colorado Soil Health Program (CSHP) is not just about better yields—it’s about creating a more sustainable, eco-friendly food system for everyone.

HEALTHY SOIL: KEY TO SUSTAINABILITY

At the heart of successful farming lies healthy soil, a dynamic system that supports life, boosts yields, and nurtures ecosystems. Colorado’s farmers and ranchers are working hard to maintain this balance by experimenting with cover crops, crop rotations, and grazing techniques. The CSHP helps them make these vital changes without risking their livelihoods.

RISK-FREE INNOVATION

Farmers and ranchers know that improving soil health can lead to bigger, healthier crops and livestock—but the risk of failure often holds them back. The CSHP, through the STAR Conservation program, offers the tools, guidance, and rewards to help producers take bold steps toward sustainability.

EMPOWERING FARMERS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Trained technical assistance providers install METER TEROS 10 and TEROS 11 soil moisture sensors within a test field provided by the producer. Researchers at CSU collect and analyze the data and work with producers to interpret that data, and researchers analyze this data over a three-year period, reporting results back to the producers. With tailored support, producers can reduce their environmental impact and boost productivity.

LEADING THE WAY TO SOIL CONSERVATION

Thanks to strong partnerships between the Colorado Department of Agriculture, Colorado State University, and other local entities, the CSHP is paving the way for a greener future. The passage of the Agricultural Soil Health Program in 2021 solidified Colorado’s commitment to supporting sustainable farming practices, making it easier than ever for producers to embrace soil health for long-term success.

TURNING CHALLENGES INTO TRIUMPHS: COLORADO’S SOLUTION TO SOIL DEGRADATION

Soil degradation threatens the very foundation of agriculture, leading to decreased water retention and smaller crop yields. But by adopting practices that restore soil health, Colorado farmers can reverse the damage, reduce their water usage, and build healthier, more productive land.

For farmers, this can translate to less water application, fewer weeds to manage, and reduced pesticide and fertilizer use. It also means a larger, higher-quality crop yield.

For ranchers, the right balance translates to stronger feed crops that require less time sowing or spent on weed management, less time needed in the pasture, and higher quality nutrients for their cattle, which in turn leads to less medication and healthier animals.

The CSHP provides the support and resources needed to make these changes possible and sustainable.

Farmer Improving The Food Chain Through Soil Health
"In the western US, we're drought prone. And so anything we can do to increase water holding capacity of our soils is a benefit."

A SUSTAINABLE FOOD FUTURE FOR ALL

By supporting soil health, Colorado is not just securing the future of its farmers—it's contributing to a global movement toward sustainable food systems. With healthier soil, fewer chemicals, and more efficient use of water, the benefits of soil conservation extend beyond the farm to everyone.
